Welcome to A Breath of French Air, the new incarnation of what was formerly A Place at my Table. I’ve refreshed the name because I’ve been feeling ready to expand creatively for some time and needed more of a blue-sky space to do that in. Don’t worry, the table will always be here (I am still Laura Calder, after all), and, with it, a guaranteed place at it for you.

What will be different with A Breath of French Air is that it will be a more genuine and personal reflection of why I’ve returned to France. When I lived here in my thirties, French cuisine and table arts were my passions, still both subjects of great interest to me, but not ground I feel the need to keep going over. My appetite at this stage of life is more for the permission France gives a person to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures of everyday life (including at the table). I’m here for that, as well as to gather fresh perspectives and ideas, discover new people, places, and things, and literally get a change of air after what has been a challenging past decade.

Obviously, what’s also different is that I’ve not returned to France alone. My husband, Peter, is with me on the adventure, and the extra pair of eyes opens up all that much more to see and experience. So here we are, off to seek our fortunes as we step into the New Year. We hope you’ll join us.
