Sometimes you cross a threshold in life and are clueless about it until you realize that the world is reflecting back to you what you never realized you had become. Today, I was walking down the street in Paris with my head in the clouds, as carefree as youth itself, when one of two young men conversing on the sidewalk casually threw a leg back as I went past. I hurtled over it like a badly trained show-jumper, and, when I landed, I was being steadied by the lad of wayward limb, whose mortified eyes met mine as he pleaded, “Excusez-moi, madame!”
